Easter in boardies!

Oh god, it's Easter, our first one away from home, and we've just realized we have no idea how to make any of our favourite foods. Yes, we've watched our moms make the food every year, but mostly all we have had to do in the process is pre-butter the rolls and get drink orders. In the spirit of adventurous traveling, we were off to the Coles grocery store to get provisions to re-create our Easter favs, and cook a dinner for our friends Josh and Daniel....

Our apartment post shopping and pre-cleaning/cooking. Lots of work to do... especially since our "fully furnished" place doesn't come with anything needed to cook a full dinner. This could go badly.

Armed with our mom's recipes, we get to work. In process here: broccoli salad (we had to basically burn the bacon here to get it crisp!), potato casserole, gravy, pumpkin soup, deviled eggs, and of course, wine! Thanks to Rye for the super camera extender... it works great!... although we probably don't need another reason to take goofy self portraits.

Just like home... having drinks before dinner as the guests arrive (our friend Daniel lives below us in our apartment unit. He also works as a bartender at the local nightclub... good friend to have!). Tasmanian beer.... very nice. The place is starting to smell like turkey and potatoes. Yum!

Table is set, complete with Easter eggs and shells we collected from our local beach. This is literally EVERY dish we own.

Mars making deviled eggs!

The spread is ready! And so are the guests. Easter dinner is a little less formal here... note the board shorts, and the fact that Josh isn't even wearing a shirt under his hoodie. hehe. The feast consists of: pumpkin soup with sour cream (from a can), a stuffed chicken (store bought), a turkey (store bought), Gloria's famous broccoli salad (no raisins!), Gale's famous deviled eggs (no pretty piping), potato casserole (they don't sell frozen hashbrowns here... had to cut potatoes!), gravy (pouch), buns (pre-buttered!), and wine (Australian).
At the end of the meal, we were all stuffed, and the boys seemed impressed. Mission accomplished, even though we didn't stuff a turkey or make a dessert like at home! We need a goal for next time I guess :)
Overall, a great night. And no, mom and auntie, just because we CAN make this stuff, doesn't mean we WILL when we get home! Your dishes taste much better... we came close but nothing beats your home cooking :) To the Fam - sorry we can't be there to celebrate with you... set a place at the table for us! To my bro - sorry we left you to be the only kid there... drink some beers for us.

Happy Easter everyone!!

  2. Ditto - looks like quite a feast! How come you had it so early?? Knew you 2 could "kinda" pull it off as long as there was some booze to assist you in your tasks! Hope everyone is still OK after consuming your meal:) Will miss you at Easter dinner with the family. Poor Daniel will be quite lonely. First time without you here for dinner - won't be the same. Love to you and Marissa!
