Wine and Waves - Afton hits Noosa!

After a long flight, where she was a nice Canadian and volunteered to switch seats with a girl who was separated from her friend... only to find out she traded a window for a middle seat!... Afton arrived at our pimp apartment for a week of fun in Noosa. Mars and Afton took advantage of the nice sunshine we are having and walked the entire National Park (I think Afton may still have blisters!) where they saw more old naked men on the nude beach! They spent some time soaking up the rays on Main Beach as well... the weather has been great here lately. The three of us also went to check out the Eumundi markets, where there are over 700 vendors... on a Wednesday! Afton bought a boomerang :) In the middle of the week, when Mars was at work, I took Afton out for her first surf lesson! Despite being a bit hesitant of the big ocean waves, she did an awesome job and stood up! If she'd had a few more weeks, we could have made her a pro for sure :) All the while in between these activities, Mars and I got to work introducing Afton to the world of Australian wine. She claims she doesn't like it and never drank it in TO, but by the middle of the week, the 3 of us were into lots of bubbly and even got Afton liking some nice white wine! hehe. This was a good plan, as it paid off when we went out to dinner with Ross (Chef from Mars' work) and Sarah (my friend from work) to a restaurant called Rock Salt. This place was a BYO, so we each brought a bottle of wine, and then proceeded to buy more from the bottle shop NEXT DOOR to the restaurant... dangerous! We had a great dinner, but instead of leaving it at that, we just HAD to take Afton to our local pub, Irish Murphys! Many drinks and Jager Bombs followed!
Mars and Afton are now traveling up the coast (lucky!!) while I work a few more shifts (boo!). They just finished a few days in beautiful Sydney (where Mars reported via email that it was "cold" there! haha. We have so acclimatized!) and they are now boarding a boat for a 3 day cruise of the Whitsunday Islands.
It was great fun having Afton here... our last visitor before we set off around the world! Thanks for coming Afton! I will post our itinerary as soon as I can... problem is that the screen on my laptop has died! I can only see it... and just barely... if I sit out on my balcony and the sun is shining! The screen is THAT dark now (and yes, I have tried the screen brightening functions). So apologies for all spelling errors, and to all of you who have sent me emails I've yet to respond to... it's really difficult to do when you can't see the screen! haha. This post has taken me AGES to finish, and I can't really see any of the pictures I've selected (damn cloud cover!)...

    Too bad about your computer. Need to be updated re your travel plans. Keep me posted -you will be sad to leave there. Can't wait to hear about your next adventure!

Water water everywhere!

Again I'm on the worlds slowest and most expensive internet. Am having an AMAZING time in Africa. Our group is lots of fun, and we've seen some beautiful places. Spent 4 nights on Zanzibar Island (off the Tanzanian coast), and it was a beach paradise. SO freaking nice, with beautiful weather and lots of drinks (and, importantly, no tents!). Spent time in the water there, as well as in Lake Malawi... 2 days there! Am having a great time. Timon and Zazu.... where are you?

Am in Kenya. Literally in the middle of the Lion King movie. I swear, I was expecting the lions we drove RIGHT up to every day to have the voice of James Earl Jones. I cannot even come close to describing how amazing the last 2 days have been. We spent them in the Masi Mara reserve, just driving around looking for wildlife. We saw so much! I had to stop myself to realize that what I was seeing was real. In 2 days, we saw: Gazelles, zebra (about 2000!), ostrich, Lion (so many! multiple prides), elephant, giraffe, buffalo, maribou stork (a scavenger.. it eats babies!), vulture, waterbuck , impala, warthog (like Pumba !), baboon, eland, antelope, hyena, cheetah, wildabeast , heartabeast (I think tour guide made that up), black rhino (very rare), hippo, and a massive crocodile! We have seen 4 out of 5 of the "Big 5" African game, as well as all cast members of the Lion King except Timon ( meerkat ) and Zazu (some strange bird that is pretty rare). Alex the Great-ish.

The last stop on our extensive travels through Egypt was the city of Alexandria... founded and named after Alexander the Great in 332BC. This is the city where the famous "Queen of the Nile" Cleopatra also reigned. The ancient city was considered to be the intellectual capital of the world at that time, due in large part to it's massive library. The modern city was again popular in the early 1900's when foreigners came in and built some beautiful buildings. Today, the city is a bit run down.. a sad version of it's former glory. However, the library, which burnt down in ancient wars, was just rebuilt. It was GORGEOUS. The largest modern library in the world. Aunt Gale - you would have died! We spent a while wandering around there marvelling at the architecture and lamenting about how depressing our university library was in comparison (if Weldon library looked like this, I may have actually gone to it! haha).
